My good friend Trevor (teachers, check out his three books: The Epic Classroom, The Collaborative Classroom, and New Teacher Mindset) has a history of introducing things into my life that become borderline obsessions.
The list so far:
Fly fishing (and fly tying)
The greatest game alive: Smash Ball (a game we made up with two other close friends — more on this another time)
And now... sourdough bread
I fully recognize I'm late to the sourdough game. The Sourdough Express came and went during the pandemic, and I'm ashamed that I didn't make it through Platform 9 ¾ in time for it to set off for Hogwarts, where it surely must dwell.
But guys — my buddy Trevor had a blue Ford Anglia that flies, and he let me hitch a ride to the magical world of sourdough bread!
The joy I get from the process of making a loaf of sourdough feels almost unreasonable. Feeding the starter and watching it come alive and grow, kneading the dough with my hands, the smell of fresh bread permeating the whole house, cutting into the loaf in hopeful anticipation of the perfect crumb, lathering the slice with way too much Irish butter (just kidding — there's no such thing as too much Irish butter)...
Enjoying something I made with my hands, attention, and love — it’s one of my favorite things to do with my time right now.
And so, making and baking sourdough bread has earned its rightful place as a #1 pick for my new blog post series: Sleeper Hits @ Home!
